Nazi işgalinde Hollanda’ya göç
etmek zorunda kalmaları ve
işgal sırasındaki yokluk günleri,
onun zaten hasta geçen
çocukluğunun daha sağlıksız
devam etmesine sebep oldu.
Ergenlik yaşına gelene dek
savaşın ortasında büyüyen ve
birçok sağlık sorunu ile baş
etmek zorunda kalan Audrey
ve ailesi “2. Dünya Savaşı”nda,
daha sonra iyi niyet elçiliği
yapacağı UNICEF’in desteği
ile hayatta kalma mücadelesini
sürdürdü. Savaşın ortasında
bir süreliğine de olsa eğitimini
alabildiği çocukluk hayali olan
baş balerinlik zayıf düşen
bedenine uygun olmasa da,
ömrünün sonuna kadar bir
balerin zarafetiyle yaşadı.
Audrey ve ailesi savaş sonrası
tamamen yokluk içinde
kalmışlardı ama hayata olan
bağlılıkları ve gelecekten
kesilmeyen umutları,
yeniden başlamak için yeterli
sebeplerdi. Küçük yaşlarda,
sıcak savaşın içinde açlık ve
yoksulluk içine düştü. Evinden,
yuvasından oldu, sokaklarda
kaldı. Birçok ölüme tanıklık
etti. Hayallerinin yıkılmasına
sebep olan sağlık sorunlarını,
her zaman karşı olduğu savaş
yüzünden yaşadı Audrey. İşte
bu yüzden eğer o, herhangi bir
şey için “mümkündür” dediği
sürece hiçbir şey imkânsız
değildi.
Savaş günleri sonrası
Londra’da sıfırdan kurulan
bir hayat başladı. Audrey,
sinemaya olan ilgisi ve oyuncu
olma hayalleriyle, aldığı bale
eğitiminin yanı sıra modellik
de yaptı. Annesi çalışıyor
Audrey’e de okuldan kalan
zamanlarında çalışarak
harçlığını çıkarmaya uğraştı.
Bir yandan da takip ederek
kendine göre şekillendirdiği
modayla ilgileniyor, yıllarca
konuşulup taklit edileceğini
tahmin bile edemediği stilinin
temellerini atıyordu. Geçirdiği
hastalıklar geride kalmıştı

their home, were left out in the
streets. Came across death. She
experienced the health problems
that devastated her dreams
because of war, something she
was always against. That is why;
if she says nothing is impossible,
it is “possible”.
After the days of war, a brand
new life began in London. In line
with her dreams of becoming an
actress and her love for cinema,
along with ballet classes, she
started modelling. Her mother
was working and Audrey tried
to earn her pocket money by
working after school. She was
also interested in fashion, which
she adapted to her liking, setting
the ground for her sense of style
to be talked about and repeated
for years to come. The illnesses
were left behind but their traces
were enough to destroy her
dreams and plans for herself.
She decided to move to plan “B”
instead of feeling sorry, because
Audrey knew exactly what to do
in negative situations. So she
was not going to be a ballerina,
she would find another way to
dance, be on stage. She did
exactly that. She auditioned for
musicals in London and was
successful and with the small
roles she got, she enriched
herself and took sound steps
towards an acting career. She
took walk-on roles in movies,
with a few or no lines, both to
earn money and move closer
to her dream. After the long
hours of waiting in audition lines,
she started appearing bigger
movies and had better roles. As
she always believed, “the more
you want something, the harder
you work, that is how much you
deserve it and you always get
what you deserve”, every step
she took got her closer to her
truth.
“I have learned how to live,
to be outside and inside
the world without standing
in the sidelines. I will never
ever escape from life. From
love…”
Her unique aura, her innocent
expression and her unusual
figure were remarkable; she
dazzled everyone with her glow.
