“Özgürlük Madalyası”nı
aldıktan bir yıl sonra, kanserle
daha fazla mücadele edemedi
ve hayata karşı ilk kez yenik
düştü. Aslında bu da onun
için bir son olamazdı, olmadı
da. Gittiği yerden belki
yıldızlar, belki yeni doğan
bebekler aracılığı ile dünyaya
ulaşan ruhunda sevgi, iyilik
ve şefkat dalgaları onu
tanıyan tanımayan herkesi
etkisi altına aldı. Etkin olduğu
dönemden yıllar sonra bugün
bile hala giyim tarzı örnek
alınıyor, Tifanny’deki kahvaltısı
konuşuluyor; unutulmayan
karelerinin bulunduğu eşyaların
vitrinleri süslüyor oluşu belki
de gerçek bir melek olduğunun
kanıtı. Dış görünüşün, iç
dünyanın yansıması olduğuna
inanıyordu ve tıpkı açıkladığı
güzellik sırrında olduğu gibi
insanlara iyilikle baktığı için
güzeldi gözleri, yemeğini açlar
ve yoksullarla paylaşmayı
bildiği için zarif bir bedeni
vardı; çocukların okşamasına
izin verdiği için güzel saçlara,
hep güzel şeyler söylediği
için güzel dudaklara sahipti
Audrey. Kibir ve cehaletle
değil, bilgelik ve tevazu ile
yürüdüğü için dikkatleri hep
üzerinde topluyordu belki de.
Siyah-beyaz filmlere kattığı
renkler; duygularının, dünya
görüşünün ve hayata olan
aşkının renkleriydi.
gave her another chance at love.
Robert Wolders, whom she met
at an event, struggled to survive
the war in an area very close to
her. It was like they waited all
these year to meet each other,
to share stories. By now, Audrey
had totally abandoned her career
and had a different plan for the
rest of her life. Albeit peaceful,
love and compassion filled days
awaited her with her soul mate,
her other half Robert Wolders ,
she felt that there was a debt to
be paid from her past. She would
join UNICEF, who helped her
family during war, enabling her
survival and gave her hope, and
she felt really “good”; filling the
void she has felt all her life.
Audrey, always believing in
miracles, started delivering
miracles with UNICEF where she
volunteered as of 1989. Behind
her fragile and delicate exterior,
there was a woman who endured
so much pain that it would
make other people give-up. She
accepted her faults and flaws,
loved herself with them, and
accepted others as they are. She
was objective towards everyone,
never blamed others for her
pain. She observed the workings
of UNICEF, contemplating on
future plans and took action.
She went to Ethiopia where
there was starvation and took
on effective missions. She
spoke to the world when she
got back. She did interviews for
UNICEF. Helped and assisted in
donations. She worked on many
projects from polio vaccination in
Turkey to educating the women
of Venezuela. Everywhere
she went, she was not only an
ambassador of UNICEF, but of
goodness and benevolence.
Field trips, summits for children,
fund raising festivals… It was all
to introduce the people in need
with the donators and increase
awareness.
While delivering love and help
to people, her illness from her
childhood relapsed. One year
later she received the “Medal of
Freedom”, the highest honor for
personal acts in the USA, at the
end of 1992 she lost her battle
with cancer. This could never be
the end for her, it was not. From
where she went, she affected
everyone with her loving and
good soul that the ones know her
or the ones that do not, maybe
through stars or through new
born babies. Her style is still
looked up to even today, years
after her days of popularity,
her breakfast at Tiffany’s is still
talked about; the fact that her
unforgettable scenes decorate
shop windows mean that she
is an angel. She knew that your
appearance is a reflection of your
inner world and as in the beauty
tips she declared, her eyes are
beautiful because she looks for
good in others, her body was
slender because she shared her
food with the hungry and the
poor; she had beautiful hair for
she let children caress them, and
beautiful lips for she spoke words
of silence. She drew attention
because she walked with wisdom
and humility instead of vanity and
ignorance. The colors she added
to the black and white films were
the colors of emotions, world
view and love of life.
