Mecnun. Sevdiğini kendinden
başka bir yerde aramaması
gerektiği gerçeğine ulaşan
Mecnun ile sevdiğinin ulaştığı
mertebeye saygı duyup kalbine
gömdüğü aşkıyla ölüme giden
Leyla’nın, herkesin bildiği
hikâyesi… Arap, İran ve Türk
edebiyatında önemli bir yere
sahip bu efsanenin birçok
işlenişi var. Ancak en bilineni
16. yüzyılda Fuzuli’nin 3036
beyitten oluşan mesnevisi.
Efsanenin kahramanlarının
Arabistan’da yaşayan gerçek
kişiler olduğuna inan da
var, ilahi aşkı anlatan en
güzel hayal ürünü olduğunu
düşünen de. Herkesçe bilinen
asıl hikâyesine göre her şey,
asıl adı Kays olan, bir kabile
reisinin oğlu Mecnun’un,
bir gün okulda başka bir
kabile reisinin kızı Leyla ile
karşılaşmasıyla başlar. Her
an biraz daha büyüyen aşk,
Leyla’nın ailesinin kulağına
gider ve görüşmelerini
engellemek için Leyla
okuldan alınır. Kays, Leyla’yı
bir daha göremeyeceğini
anlayınca kederden çılgına
döner ve “Mecnun” olup
kendini çöllere vurur. Artık,
o “Leyla”sını kendi çölünde
ararken, kendi içinde bulmuş
bir Mecnun’dur. Mecnun’un
babası ise oğlunu kurtarmak
için Leyla’yı ailesinden ister
ama Kays’ın deli olduğunu
düşünen aile kızlarını vermek
istemezler. Leyla bunun üzerine
evden kaçıp çölde sevdiğini
aramaya başlar. Bulur, ancak
bulduğu Kays değil, ilahi
aşkla maddeden ayrılmayı
başarmış bir Mecnun’dur
ve Leyla’yı tanımaz. Onun
“Leyla”sı artık kendi içindedir.
Oğlu için endişelenen baba,
Mecnun’u iyileşmesi ümidiyle
Kabe’ye götürür. Mecnun
burada Allah’a yakarır ve “Ya
Rab belâ-yı aşk ile kıl âşinâ
beni. Bir dem belâ-yı aşkdan
etme cüdâ beni.” duasını eder.
Bu dua, onun aşkını çoğaltır.
Leyla ise ailesi tarafından
istemediği halde evlendirildiği
adamdan bir bahane ile
uzaklaşmayı başarmış, kendini
son nefesine dek Mecnun’un
aşkına adamıştır. Mecnun’un
bir arkadaşı aracılığı ile iki
aşık mektuplaşırlar ancak
anlaşamamaları üzerine Leyla
her şeyi göze alıp Mecnun’un
çölüne gider. Mecnun’un
ona söylediği “Leyla benim
içimdedir, sen kimsin?”
sözleri üzerine, Leyla artık
bu hayatta kalmak için bir
sebep bulamaz ve ölmek için
dualar eder. Duaları kabul
olan Leyla’nın ölüm haberini
alan Mecnun, maşuğunun
mezarı başında son nefesiyle
“Ya Rab, manâ cism-ü can
gerekmez. Cânânsuz cihân
gerekmez.” der. Artık Leyla ile
Mecnun, rüyalarda buluşan,
aşkları dillere destan olup
nesiller boyu anlatılan bir
aşk masalının unutulmaz
kahramanlarıdır. Onlar aşklarını
dünya heveslerine feda etmek
yerine, bedenen kavuşamayan
ama ruhları “bir” olan iki aşıktı.
Belki söylendiği gibi yalnızca
“kavuşamadıkları” için efsane
olan; belki de aşkın gerçek
anlamını bulan iki aşık.

Her inanışta, her toplumda
var olan aşk, dillerden dile
aktarılan hikâyelerle canlı
tutularak; hayal gücüne hitap
eden detaylar, yürekleri yakan
acılarla süslenip yüceltiliyor.
Aşk uğruna her zorluğa
katlanmak, gerçek aşıkların
maddesel dünyada değil,
diğer dünyada kavuşması, aşk
efsanelerinin ortak noktası
gibi. İlk anlatanı bilinmeyip
anonim olarak kabul edilen,
kulaktan kulağa geçen bir
başka efsane de, Kerem ile
Aslı’nın aşk ile nasıl yanıp
kül olduklarının zamanla
zamansızlaşan hikâyesi…
Gerçek ismi “Mirza Bey” olan
each passing moment reaches
the ears of Leyla’s family and
Leyla is taken from the school to
prevent them from seeing each
other. When Kays understands
that he won’t be able to see Leyla
he goes mad with sadness thus
becoming “Mecnun” and going
off to the deserts. He is now a
Mecnun who will find his “Leyla”
inside of him while looking for
her in the desert. Mecnun’s
father asks for Leyla’s hand in
marriage for her son but the
family refuses thinking that Kays
has gone mad. Leyla then runs
away from her hose to search for
her lover. She finds him but the
person she finds is not Kays but
a Mecnun who has succeeded
in separating himself from the
material world through divine
love and he doesn’t recognize
Leyla. His “Leyla” is inside him.
The father worries about his
son and takes him to the Kaaba
hoping that this will cure him.
Mecnun prays to the God here
reciting the prayer, “O, God, let
me know the misfortunes of love.
Do not put me away from one
moment of this misfortune.” This
prayer increases his love. Leyla
succeeds in sending off a man
that she was forced to marry and
has devoted herself to her love for
Mecnun till the bitter end. The two
lovers start corresponding via
letters through the help of one of
Mecnun’s friends but when they
cannot understand one another
Leyla takes every risk and goes to
see Mecnun in the desert. When
Mecnun tells her, “Leyla is inside
me, who are you?”, Leyla loses
all her reasons for living and
starts praying for death. When
Leyla’s prayers are answered and
Mecnun learns of the bitter end
of his lover, he goes to her grave
and utters in his last breath, “O
God, I do not need a physical
beloved. And I do not need
the world without my beloved.”
From then on Leyla and Mecnun
become the unforgettable
heroes of a love tale passed on
from generation to generation.
They were two lovers whose
souls became “one” instead
of sacrificing their love for one
another to worldly whims even if
they could not unite physically.
Maybe they became legends
because they could not “unite” as
is thought, but maybe they were
two lovers who were able to find
the true meaning of love.

Love exists in each belief and
society and is kept alive by tales
passed down from generation to
generation with details appealing
to one’s imagination which are
embellished with heart wrenching
pains. Enduring all kinds of
hardships for love and the uniting
of lovers not in the material world
but in the world are the common
grounds of all love legends.
Another anonymous legend is
the timeless story of how Kerem
and Aslı burned with love… The
love between a folk singer Kerem
whose real name was “Mirza
Bey” and Aslı, the daughter of
an Armenian priest whose real
name is Black Sultan became
legendary in time. Kerem who
was the right arm of the aging
Sultan and the beautiful daughter
of the priest fell in love madly.
Their families rejected this love
because they were of different
religions and cultures thereby
they could never unite. Kerem
fell in love and made his saz the
teller of his love, he sought for his
“Aslı” all the while going from one
place to another. Even though
they came together a few times,
Aslı’s father got in between them
and took his daughter far away.
Despite everything they never
gave up on one another and at
last they united and married. On
the night of their wedding Kerem
heaved a great sigh when he
untied the magical shirt that the
priest had given his daughter and
this sigh covered up his body
and burned him. While Aslı was
crying for her lover, the flames
took her as well and the ashes of
the two lovers mingled together.
The ashes of the bodies which
could not unite in this world came
together in the other world. There
are many hidden details in the
story of Kerem and Aslı which has
stayed the same for centuries but
told in different manners. Kerem
who burned with the flames of
his love is also one of the finest
examples of folk poetry.
