Aşkın güzellikle olan ilgisi…
Eros küçük bir çocukken bir arı
tarafından sokulduğunda canı
çok yanar, hemen annesine
giderek; “nasıl oluyor da bu
kadar küçük bir iğne böyle
büyük acılara sebep oluyor”
diye sorar. Afrodit ise “Sen
de küçüksün oğlum, ama sen
de okunla bir arı gibi herkesin
canını yakmıyor musun?” diye
cevaplar Eros’u. Peki bir aşk
tanrısının aşkı nasıl olur acaba?
Efsaneye göre Psyche(Ruh),
bilinmeyen bir ülkede yaşayan,
eşsiz güzellikte bir prensestir.
Psyche o kadar güzeldir ki,
onu bir kez gören erkekler
tanrıça Afrodit’e tapınmaktan
vazgeçerler. Afrodit bu duruma
çok sinirlenir, oğlu Eros’a bu
kızı dünyadaki en çirkin adama
aşık etmesini emreder. Ne var
ki Eros’un oku bu kez kendi
yüreğine isabet etmiştir. Eros,
Psyche’yi başka bir adama aşık
edeceği yerde, kıza kendisi
aşık olur ve meltem (batı
rüzgarı) tanrısı Zephyros’un
da işbirliği ile kızı yanına,
kimsenin bilmediği bir saraya
kaçırtır. Ölümlülerin bir tanrının
yüzünü görmeleri yasak
olduğundan Eros, kimliğini
Psyche’den gizli tutar ve ona
kendisine asla bakmamasını
söyler. Birlikte oldukları oda bu
yüzden her zaman kapkaranlık
tutulmaktadır. Derken günün
birinde Psyche, Eros’tan,
çok özlediğini söylediği
kız kardeşleri ile kendisini
görüştürmesini rica eder.
Eros buna razı gelir. Fakat
saraya gelen kız kardeşler,
görkemi karşısında küçük
dillerini yuttukları sarayda
yaşayan kardeşlerini ölesiye
kıskandıkları için, Psyche’nin
aklına olmadık kuşkular,
meraklar sokarlar. Bir kahin,
kızlara Psyche’nin kocasının bir
canavar olacağını söylemiştir.
Psyche işittiği bu laflar
neticesinde içini kemirmeye
başlayan meraka yenik
düşerek bir gece, yanında
uyumakta olan Eros’un yüzüne
ışık tutar. Zavallı kız, gözlerinin
önünde çirkin bir yılan değil de
dünyanın en yakışıklı gencini
görünce öylesine büyülenir
ki aşkın verdiği dalgınlıktan,
elindeki kandilden birkaç
damla yağı Eros’un omuzuna
damlatır. Eros, büyük bir
aldatılmışlık duygusu ve hayal
kırıklığı içinde uyanır, durumu
anlar anlamaz da sarayı
terk eder. Kaybettiği aşkını
dünyanın dört bucağında
umarsızca arayan zavallı kız,
nihayet durumu Afrodit’le
konuşması gerektiğini
kavrar. Güzellik tanrıçası, kızı
sınamak için ona bir dizi güç,
neredeyse olanaksız görevler
ve işler verir. Yapılması istenen
işler arasında, yerin yedi kat
dibindeki Ölüler Ülkesi’ne
inmek gibi, öyle tehlikeli
vazifeler vardır ki bir ölümlünün
bu vazifeleri ölümsüzlerin
yardımı olmaksızın yerine
getirebilmesi mümkün değildir.
Fakat Pscyhe kendisine
verilen dört görevi de
başarıyla tamamlar; Eros ile
Psyche, bizzat tanrıların hazır
bulunduğu bir evlilik töreni ile
sonsuza dek birleşirler. Eros
(Aşk) ve Psyche (Ruh)’un bir
kızları olur, adı “Hedone” yani
“Haz”dır.

to his mother Aphrodite. The
relationship of love with beauty…
When Eros is a small child a bee
stings him and he is hurt badly,
he goes to his mother and asks,
“how can a needle this small
gives so much pain?”. Aphrodite
says, “Son, you are also small
but don’t you hurt everyone with
your arrow just like the bee?”.
Now what would the love of a
god of love be like? Legend has
it that Psyche (Soul) is a beautiful
princess living in an unknown
land. Psyche is so beautiful
that men who see her renounce
worshipping Aphrodite. Aphrodite
gets angry at this and commands
her son Eros to make this girl fall
in love with the ugliest men on
earth. However this time Eros’
arrow hits his own heart. Eros
falls in love with Psyche instead
of making her fall in love with
another man and with the help of
Zephyr (western winds) snatches
her away to a castle no one
knows of. Since it is forbidden
for mortals to see the face of
gods, Eros keeps his identity
secret and tells her to never look
at him. That is why he keeps it
dark inside when they meet. Then
one day Psyche asks Eros to let
her meet with her sisters whom
she missed a lot. Eros accept
this. However the sisters who
come to the palace are jealous
of Psyche when they see the
grandeur that she lives in and
while talking to her they tell her
things that make her suspicious.
An oracle has told the girls that
Psyche’s husband will transform
into a monster. These things that
she hears make Psyche curious
and then one night her curiosity
takes over and she sheds a light
on the face of Eros. The poor
girl is so mesmerized when she
sees the most handsome man
instead of a snake, that she drips
a few drops of wax on Eros. Eros
wakes up feeling disappointment
and leaves the palace when he
understands what has happened.
The poor girl looks for her lost
love all over the world and
then finally understands that
she should talk about this with
Aphrodite. The god of beauty
gives her some very difficult,
almost impossible tasks to
test her. Some of the tasks
are impossible for mortals to
accomplish without the health of
immortals like going down to the
Land of the Dead seven stories
below the earth. But Psyche
successfully completes all four of
the tasks given to her; Eros and
Psyche get married forever under
the witnessing of gods. Eros
(Love) and Psyche (Soul) have a
daughter; her name is “Hedone”
meaning “Pleasure”.
