where Tate Modern is at, will be
our next stop on the way to Tower
Bridge after passing the National
Theatre. If you are interested
in modern arts, be ready for a
breathtaking show. This renewed
building, which was originally an
electric plant, is included in Tate
museum group. Although it is
not as great as Istanbul Modern,
the cafe on the top floor of Tate
Modern, which is the biggest
modern art gallery in Europe,
offers you a great city scenery (Off
the record, it can’t be nothing like
the sillhouette of the historical
peninsula in Istanbul). Design
Museum is a close stop for those
who are not satisfied with art
and design. As you can predict
from its name, this museum next
to Tate Modern will be a place
where art is appreciated from
many different point of views,
and where you will gape with
astonishment as if you were
hypnotized. At the same time it
is the first museum for modern
designs in the world. It is a place
which evolves continiously due
the changes in content, and you
can be filled with many different
information each time you visit. As
it is also called “Shakespeare’s
Globe”, Globe Theatre is our
second stop which is right next to
Tate Modern. The location which
was founded by the national
poet of Britian, the first name that
pops to your mind when English
Literature is mentioned, and
therefore called Shakespeare’s
Globe. The location, which you
can remember from the movie
“Shakespeare in Love”, is in
the shape of a timbered triplex
amphitheatre and still hosts
drama activities. On the way out,
if only you move towards the west
from the theatre on the riverside
of Thames, a gorgeous pub will
be waiting for you. Smoked steak
sandwich and beer is fabulous
and is called Founder’s Arms. It
should be mentioned that set up
on Saturdays, Borough Market,
the paradise of gastronomy is in
the South Bank area. Don’t forget
to note that.
You will see the Millenium Bridge
right opposite to Tate Modern and
if you just look over the bridge
you will see St. Paul Cathedral.
The biggest in London and there
is an entrance fee. The offer for a
15 pound fee is great: It says “The
Gate of Paradise” on the door of
the cathedral. Remaining from
the Middle Ages, the structure
went to rack and ruin with the
great fire in 1666 and was rebuilt
to a large extent in 1675. After
St. Peter Church in Rome, St.
Paul Cathedral has the world’s
second biggest dome with a
110 metre height, is a place that
sticks in minds for hosting the
wedding ceremony of Prince
Charles and Lady Diana as well
as the funerals of Churchill and
Thatcher. The visitors should not
forget to test the fantastic aquistic
of “Whispering Gallery” by moving
through the south corridor and
climbing up 259 stairs. At least,
raise your head and look up at
the magnificence of the dome
even though you do not enter
inside. Almost all the architectural
masterminds of the world have
created their most beautiful art
for religion. Common grounds
everywhere on earth…
We move along the riverside
towards Tower Bridge, the most
well-known blue bridge of London.
We take a lot of pictures. As you
come close to the bridge, Tower
of London welcomes you. Located
on the bank of River Thames,
London Tower with its 900 years
of history is one of the oldest
and most frightening structures.
This tower where all the jewels of
the royal family were stored was
also used as a prison and armory
all along its history. Those, who
were against monarchy, were
kept closed and the prisoners
were being executed here. The
first palace of the king and the
tower, which was used in 1200s,
of London was here. Also the
White Tower, where the ghost of
Anna Boleyn is said to be walking
around, is worth seeing.
The Tower Bridge, which will
confront you after passing London
Tower, is a structure which will
pop out of from subconciousness
to remind you that you are in
London. It is an ornamental
example, built in 1894, of
Victorian Period. Having a very
important engineering success
for the time it was built, beyond
question the bridge is one of the
most well-known in the world.
The architectural aesthetics,
which is ornamented by granite
and portland cement with a
Neo Gothic style and hides the
steelwork of the bridge, is unique
