textiles. Yıldırım Mayruk, who is
acknowledged as a fashion doyen
prefers to be called a “tailor”
rather than a “stylist”, is a very
important name for Bursa. The
Ayşe-Ece Ege sisters of Bursa,
who became famous with their
Dice Kayek trademark, continue to
create original and much spoken
designs. Another respected
person of Bursa in the fashion
industry is Arzu Kaprol, who was
a member of music band Volvox,
formed by Şebnem Ferah before
she achieved her international
fashion career. Atıl Kutoğlu, who
has princesses and celebrities
among his customers, is one of
those who were born in İstanbul
but raised in Bursa.
That Bursa is an inspirational
city for talented painters with
its must-see sceneries and
matchless natural beauties can
only explain the presence of
some successful painters, who
were born in Bursa and still live in
Bursa. Immortalizing Bursa in his
pictures Şefik Bursalı, who has
a bust in Kültürpark and whose
name was given to an art gallery
and to the street he lived; and
İbrahim Balaban, who improved
his interest and talent in painting
with the support of Nazım Hikmet
Ran whom he met in Bursa
prison where he stayed for a long
period, are some of those who left
ageless works of art behind.
Among the valuable artists who
played an important role in Turkish
Literature are also many names
from Bursa. Nezihe Meriç a writer
born in Gemlik, Pınar Kür who
was an important writer of modern
literature, a columnist Balçiçek
Pamir who is also known by her
TV programs and the “Sumerian
Queen” of Turkey Muazzez İlmiye
Çığ who is celebrating her 100th
birthday this year, take their place
among those valued and born in
Bursa.
We encounter many names from
Bursa not only as musicians,
artists, painters, fashion designers
or writers, but also in different
lines of business, industry and
skills. Emre Âşık who started
his professional football career
in 1992 and signed his name
to many successes until he
announced his retirement
during the 2009-2010 season,
Özhan Canaydın who was the
former president of Galatasaray
Sports Club, Ayten Uğuralp who
was a poet and a songwriter
of memorable songs, Sabiha
Gökçen who was the first female
combat pilot and also one of the
8 adopted children of Atatürk,
the sociologist Behice Boran who
lived in Bursa until she moved to
İstanbul during the Independence
War, a caricaturist Cemal Nadir
Güler who was remembered
with his Uncle, Grandfather and
Grandson, White and Black,
Yes-man, Salamon and New
Rich characters, representing
social issues, a well-known
director Ezel Akay who brings a
different commentary to common
stories and commercial films and
Celal Bayar, the third president
of Turkish Republic are good
examples of this diverse culture.
Besides those we mentioned,
there are surely others we missed
out, with more to be discovered
from Bursa in the future. After
all, Bursa is the capital city of
diversity.
