Birbirlerini ölesiye seviyorlardı ancak bu aşkın büyük bir hatta dört engeli vardı: Cerdan’ın karısı ve üç çocuğu… Bu da yeterli değilmiş gibi Piaf’ın her şeyi bir yana bırakıp sevdiği adamla mutlu olma çabaları, Cerdan’ın bir uçak kazasında hayatını kaybetmesiyle sona erdi. Piaf için daha da kötüsü vardı: Cerdan, o gece o uçağa, Piaf kendisini arayıp onu çok özlediğini söylediği için binmişti. Yarım kalan bir aşkın acısı, sevdiğini kaybetmenin sancısı ve suçluluk duygusu… Piaf’ın acılarla olan savaşı bitmeyecek gibiydi. Bu ufak tefek, çelimsiz kadının tek silahı, sıradan bir insanın çok çok üstünde yaşadığı duygularıydı. Onları dünyaya ulaştırarak biraz olsun rahatlamasını sağlayan tek şey de sesiydi. Acılarını bastırmak için alkol ve ağrı kesicilerden medet uman Piaf bir süre sonra bunlara bağımlı hale geldi. 1952’de Fransız aktör ve şarkıcı Jacques Pilss ile evlendi. Bu evlilik ancak 4 yıl sürebildi. 1959 yılında hastalandığında doktorların müziği bırakma konusundaki önerilerini umursamadı. The pain of an incomplete love, grief after the loss of a loved one and feelings of guilt… It was as if Piaf’s struggle with hardships would never end. The only weapon that this little; frail woman had was the emotions she felt more deeply than anyone else. And it was her voice which soothed her as she let the world hear her emotions. She turned to alcohol and pain killers to quench her pains but soon after became addicted. In 1952, she married the French actor and singer Jacques Pilss. This marriage could only last 4 years. When she got sick in 1959, she did not pay any attention to the suggestions of the doctors to quit singing. What could keep a woman away from music which was the only remedy for her pains and the only bond she had with life? “One should do justice to happiness with tears.” Piaf had to rise out of her ashes once again. And she did indeed try to do so. However, she injured her spine in a traffic accident and was left with a semi hunch in her back. She was diagnosed with liver cancer just when she was about to adapt to this new situation. Physical ailments, emotional scars mixed together and Piaf started using morphine to forget them all.
