61 Bu zeytin ağacının öyküsü Türkiye ve Yunanistan’ın Kıbrıs sorunu nedeniyle arasının bozuk olduğu döneme, 1999 Helsinki Zirvesi’ne dayanıyor. Dönemin Yunanistan Başbakanı Costas Simitis ve Türkiye Başbakanı Bülent Ecevit ülkelerine dönerken birbirlerine zeytin fidanı hediye ederler. Zeytin fidanı, dönemin Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Erdoğan Bilenser’in önerisiyle 17 Aralık 1999’da, Karagöz Anıtı’nın yanına dikilir. * Ecevit’in, Türk-Yunan dostluğu üzerine 1974 yılında kaleme aldığı “Mavi Büyü” şiirinden. The story of this olive tree dates back to the time when Turkey and Greece at odds with each other due to the Cyprus issue, to the 1999 Helsinki Summit. President of Greece at the time, Costas Simitis and Turkish President Bülent Ecevit present olive branches to one another as they are leaving off for their respective countries. The olive branch is planted next to the Karagöz Monument on December 17, 1999 as per the suggestion by Erdoğan Bilenser on December 17th. * From the “Blue Magic” poem by Ecevit’ on Turkish-Greek friendship.
