Bursa, fabric, costume, design and curtain…

I infuse the fabric with the emotions and expressions of the actors along with tradition and culture when designing costumes for theater. I invite the audience to the world of the characters of the play instead of just dressing the characters up.

I am one of the lucky few who can say, “If I was born again, I would be a Theater Costume Designer and I would want to have the same occupation”. For me, touching the fabrics is like the joy one gets when listening to good music or dancing… I fall in love with a single fabric from among a pile of them and I know how to revive it at that instant. Bursa is a real paradise in this aspect. You have the chance to find all kinds of fabrics in accordance to your budget. I should admit that I have been working at almost all regions of Turkey but the local tradesmen of Bursa have a special place for me. The nice conversations we have with them as well as their interest and the way they help me when they hear that I am involved with the theater have always been special to me. I love so many aspects of this city that I feel like a “local of Bursa who was not born in Bursa”. I made valuable friends in this city and we continue to put forth joyous plays and good business. In addition, as far as I could observe during the plays I worked in, Bursa is a city that likes the theater… Our plays and the theater halls are always packed…

When we hold a theater text, we actually live amidst fiction and reality. After reading the play, learning it by heart and working together with the director, it is now time to produce. We first carry out character analysis subject to the interpretation of the play and draw sketches. Afterwards we select the fabric. However, sometimes our job does not end at the fabric seller. Indeed, not all ends with the fabric. We sometimes look for the material we seek to actualize our dream for hours at a hardware shop or sometimes in front of a store that sells bags… Following the selection of the materials, we start going to and fro between tailor workshops, shoe, hat and periwig workshops. We all work intensely to actualize this imaginary world. And none of us think that the world we are creating is an imaginary one.

I have been working enthusiastically since the time I started doing this job. I think that this occupation requires an infinite imagination for creating different worlds out of the same materials. I believe that one should get academic education first in order to be able to do this job. One cannot be successful without first becoming a theater person. Because it is not possible to be successful in this job before internalizing all the technical and artistic stages of theater.
