Bir Bursaspor efsanesi… – Sedat Özden

“Yetenekli futbolcu olmaz. Her çocuk yetenekli doğar.

Yetenekli futbolcu olmaz. Her çocuk yetenekli doğar. Bursa Gençlerbirliği’nde oynarken Metin Oktay beni görmüş izlemiş, bende ışık görüp “Bu çocuğu Bursaspor’a alın” demesiyle 18 yaşındayken Bursaspor’a transfer oldum.

O dönemde Bursa’dan Eskişehir’e oradan trenle İstanbul’a gidiyorduk.

Her antrenörde beni milli takıma çağırdı.

A Bursaspor Legend…

“There is no talented soccer player. Every child is born talented. When we were children, we were making paper balls from newspaper pages and playing with it in the streets. Before Bursaspor was established, there were five Bursa teams, my love of soccer started with them and kept growing with Bursaspor.

He is a soccer legend in green-white colors, born in Bursa on the 30th of August 1953… Raised in amateur teams of Bursa, attracted the attention of Metin Oktay thus gaining his support, was featured on the cover of Time magazine; devoting all his talent and success to his country. We came together with Sedat Özden, a.ka. “Sedat 3”, soccer player from Bursaspor who took part in the national team roster the most to talk about Bursa, Bursaspor and its successes.

 Röportaj: Aleyna Yemenici

How did your soccer life begin?

There is no talented soccer player. Every child is born talented. We used to make balls out of newspapers and play on the streets during my childhood. Our talents were usually noticed by our big brothers in the neighborhood and they would say “this kid is good” if they liked the way we played. There were 5 teams in Bursa before the establishment of Bursaspor and my love of soccer started with those teams and grew with Bursaspor. I used to flee from the school to watch Bursaspor matches. I played for many amateur teams. My latest amateur team experience was my 1 year experience with Bursa Gençlerbirliği. I was transferred to Bursaspor at the age of 18 when Metin Oktay saw some light in me after watching the way I played for Bursa Gençlerbirliği and said, “Take this kid to Bursapor”.

What did you learn from Metin Oktay and during the time you spent with him?

I learned a lot from him. He is one of the all-time best players in Turkey. He used to say, “You should see the goalpost even with your back to it. You must have eyes at the back of your head as well”. He showed me how to kick the ball and where I should keep my balancing foot. He saw the light and will in my eyes. I trained a lot in order to improve myself.

What do you see when you compare the first time you played for the National team and today?

At that time we would go to Eskişehir from Bursa and then to Istanbul by train. The soccer fields were horrible. We were playing on fields where the ball would not move because of the mud. The situation was even worse for our older brothers. Fields, facilities and materials were all very limited. They wore a single shirt for up to 3-4 years. But if those players were born today, they would be playing in Europe right now.

Did you receive any offer from other teams when you were playing for Bursaspor?

I got 3 offers from Europe and many offers came from teams in İstanbul as well, but I refused them. Players of today would perhaps accept such offers if they had the chance. I always said: “Why should I do that?”. I was born and raised in Bursa, became a legend in Bursa. “I’m a child of Bursa” I said. And I decided to stay. I would do the same thing today, I don’t regret it. I won a cup then quit soccer.

How do you evaluate the infrastructure in Turkey?

There is a lot that’s lacking. That is actually my main reason to step away from soccer. Throughout my soccer life, I always wanted a good infrastructure, I always said “How can we do better?”, but nobody was listening. Turkish teams were unable to get rid of debts because of their foreign player obsession. Once, there were more Turkish players in Europe.

Do you have a favorite Turkish player?

There is not a single player in Turkey who would be worth 10 million including me. Players are getting ridiculous prices like 1 billlion and they don’t deserve that. Because of such prices, foreign players are not willing to leave our country once they come here. I have a few worldwide favorite players who I think actually deserve what they earn such as Ronaldo, Messi and Pele.

What do fans mean for a soccer club?

They are “essential” for a soccer club. They’re meant to support the team, instead of lynching their buses…. We had no clue about swearing. There was Amigo Yaşar back then, they used to call me to the tribunes shouting “captain come here”. I want to see a gentleman fan group like those times when Bursaspor became champion. I want a swear-free tribune where we can watch matches with our families.

You played as A National Team captain at Wembley during the 1984*1985 season. How does it feel to be a national team captain?

Wembley match is an honor for me and Bursa. Turkish flag was flying high with Bursaspor flag at its side during the match. I played soccer professionally for 14 years. I played for the national team in 39 matches but the numbers mean nothing, it’s all about that feeling you get as when you play. I had no issues with any coaches during my soccer career. Every single coach invited me to the national team. I went to training even at times when I had a concussion. Besides being a captain, I tried to be a brother and a good friend. We were always able to find a solution to any problem.

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages in the league for Anatolian teams?

Soccer should be managed by soccer professionals. Management quality increases with increasing quality. The amount of views from TV channels also increases the support of channels. We can also include this infrastructure issue with which I have been obsessed for 25 years. Germany made a 10 million Euro investment to its infrastructure 5 years ago. I couldn’t recognize the German team of today, they are all young players with an average age of 24. Turkish soccer should start reconsidering itself. Infrastructure requires much work, it is not something we can solve in a short period of time.
